How to Use a VPN on Xbox?

Method 1: Install VPN on your router (best for gamers)

This is the cleanest setup. Your Xbox, PlayStation, Apple TV, smart fridge — everything — gets VPN protection. You'll need a router that supports custom firmware (AsusWRT, OpenWrt, GL.iNet) or one that ships with a VPN client built in (some Asus, Netgear Nighthawk models).

1. Flash your router with compatible firmware (OpenWrt, DD-WRT, or Merlin) if needed.
2. In the router admin panel, go to VPN → OpenVPN or WireGuard.
3. Download the config file from your provider (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark all offer router config files).
4. Upload the file, enter your credentials, and Apply.
5. Connect your Xbox to the router's Wi-Fi. It will now use the VPN tunnel automatically.

Method 2: Share a VPN connection from your Windows PC

No compatible router? Use your laptop as a bridge. Connect the laptop to the VPN, then turn the laptop's Wi-Fi into a hotspot that the Xbox joins.

1. Install your VPN on the Windows PC and connect to a server.
2. Open Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile hotspot and turn it on (use 5 GHz for gaming).
