Why is VPN Not Working on My Phone?

Fix 1: Update the VPN app

Outdated apps often have broken server lists or protocol compatibility issues. Update from the App Store / Google Play, then try connecting again.

Fix 2: Switch protocol

Some networks (corporate Wi-Fi, school Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi) block specific VPN protocols. Try each in order:

• WireGuard: Fastest, but most easily detected.
• IKEv2: Best for mobile — handles Wi-Fi ↔ cellular switches seamlessly.
• OpenVPN (UDP): Faster than TCP, but blocked by some firewalls.
• OpenVPN (TCP, port 443): Slowest but bypasses most firewalls — looks like regular HTTPS traffic.

Fix 3: Disable battery optimization (Android)

Android aggressively kills apps in the background. The VPN may be getting killed mid-session.

1. Go to Settings → Apps → [VPN name] → Battery.
2. Set to Unrestricted (Samsung) or Don't optimize (stock Android).
3. Repeat for any security apps that might be killing the VPN.

On iPhone, the equivalent is Settings → General → Background App Refresh — make sure it's enabled for the VPN app.

Fix 4: Check date and time

VPN connections fail if your phone's date and time are wrong — security certificates depend on accurate time.

• iPhone: Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically (on).
• Android: Settings → General Management → Date and Time → Automatic (on).

Fix 5: Clear app cache (Android)

Corrupted cache can prevent the VPN from connecting.

1. Settings → Apps → [VPN name] → Storage → Clear Cache.
2. Reopen the app and try again.

On iPhone, the equivalent is to offload the app: Settings → [VPN name] → Offload App, then reinstall.

Fix 6: Reinstall the app

If nothing else works, a clean reinstall often fixes stubborn issues:

1. Delete the VPN app.
2. Also delete the VPN profile: Settings → General → VPN & Device Management → VPN → (i) → Delete (iPhone) or Settings → Network & internet → VPN → ⚙️ → Forget (Android).
3. Reinstall from the store and sign in again.

Fix 7: Change DNS

Some cellular networks hijack DNS. Set DNS manually to a public resolver:

• iPhone: Settings → Wi-Fi → (i) next to your network → Configure DNS → Manual → Add 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8. For cellular, you need to install the VPN app's profile or use a DNS app.
• Android: Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS → Private DNS provider hostname → enter one.one.one.one or dns.google.

Fix 8: Try a different server

Specific servers can be overloaded or blocked. Switch to:

• A different city in the same country (e.g. New York → Los Angeles).
• A specialty server (NordVPN's "Obfuscated", ExpressVPN's "Automatic").
• A different country entirely to rule out geo-blocks.

Fix 9: Check for conflicting apps

Other apps can interfere with VPNs:

• Ad-blockers: AdGuard, Blokada, 1Blocker create their own VPN profile and may conflict.
• Security suites: Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky bundle their own VPN.
• Other VPNs: Multiple VPN profiles compete — iOS only allows one at a time.
• Firewall apps: NetGuard, AFWall+ on rooted Android can block VPN traffic.

Temporarily disable these apps to see if the VPN connects.

If none of the above work, gather this info before contacting support:

• Device model and OS version (e.g. iPhone 15, iOS 18.2).
• VPN app version (in Settings → About).
• Protocol you're using.
• Server country and city you're trying to connect to.
• Exact error message (screenshot).
• When the issue started (after an OS update? after installing another app?).
